Summit Square is proud to partner with the Valley Program for Aging Services (VPAS) on a groundbreaking initiative to expand dementia care resources in our region. Through a nearly $50,000 grant from USAging, VPAS has launched The Gathering Place — a pilot program designed to provide engaging activities, meaningful social connections, and much-needed respite for caregivers and individuals living with dementia.

The Innovative Caregiver Services Grant was one of only eight awarded nationwide by USAging, the national association representing and supporting the network of Area Agencies on Aging. This project is made possible through a cooperative agreement from the Administration for Community Living. The highly selective nature of this grant underscores both the urgency of strengthening caregiver support and the significance of the work happening here in the Shenandoah Valley.

A key contributor to the development and early success of this initiative has been Summit Square Senior Marketing Counselor, Shelly Zollner, who serves as the program’s Community Program Partner. Shelly has been instrumental in bringing this project to life — coordinating efforts across multiple providers, identifying community needs, and recruiting volunteers who play a vital role in supporting participants and caregivers. Her dedication, insight, and collaborative spirit have strengthened the program’s foundation and expanded its reach across the region.

“Working on this project has been incredibly meaningful,” said Zollner. “Caregiver fatigue is real — the emotional, physical, and mental toll can feel overwhelming. The Gathering Place exists to offer relief, connection, and hope. I’m grateful to work alongside VPAS and so many committed community partners who are stepping up to support families navigating dementia. Together, we’re creating a network of compassion and practical support that truly makes a difference.”

Through this partnership, Summit Square continues its mission to inspire a spirit of community and well-being — ensuring that older adults across the Valley have access to the compassionate, person-centered care they deserve.
