King’s Grant has always been a place built for movement. Curving sidewalks trace the landscape. Gentle grades make every path feel accessible. Tree lined roads invite residents to slow down and stay awhile. Now, the community is moving forward once again as the first of the Sunnyside Communities to introduce a trishaw, a specially designed bike that carries residents across the campus and beyond, bringing back the simple pleasure of a bike ride for those who no longer pedal on their own.
The trishaw is more than a bicycle. It is a shared experience. With a trained pilot steering from behind, residents sit comfortably in front, able to feel the breeze, watch the seasons change, and take in the familiar beauty of the King’s Grant grounds. The campus, known for its bike friendly layout and peaceful scenery, offers the perfect setting. Routes wind past cottages, gardens, and gathering spaces, with plans for rides that will even extend onto nearby trails.
The community caught its first glimpse of the trishaw during the King’s Grant Christmas parade, where it made a festive debut among lights, music, and waving neighbors. It was a moment of celebration and a preview of what is to come. As winter gives way to warmer days, the trishaw will begin regular rides, opening new possibilities for residents who thought biking was a chapter of life already closed.
For residents who are bed bound or have limited mobility, the trishaw represents something especially meaningful. It offers a way to reconnect with movement, fresh air, and the outside world in a safe and supported way. A bike ride once again becomes possible, not as therapy, but as pleasure.
James Souter, executive director of King’s Grant, sees the trishaw as a natural extension of the community’s spirit.
“This is about dignity, freedom, and joy,” Souter said. “King’s Grant is a beautiful place to experience from a bike, and the trishaw allows us to share that experience with residents who might not otherwise have the opportunity. It brings smiles, conversation, and a sense of adventure back into everyday life.”
As the first Sunnyside community to welcome a trishaw, King’s Grant is setting the pace for what inclusive movement can look like in senior living. One ride at a time, it is proving that the road is still open, no matter how you travel it.
