Spend a little time at King’s Grant and you start to notice it. The feeling. The softness. The quiet moments that just hit a little different.

There is something special about this place.

Lately, it has been catching the light.

Fairy hair, as it is lovingly called, is exactly what it sounds like, though it feels a touch more enchanted. Fine, shimmering strands of tinsel are gently tied to individual pieces of hair, creating glimmers of color that move and sparkle as you do. It is subtle, but unmistakable. A flash of pink here. A strand of gold there. Sometimes you only notice it when the light hits just right, and then suddenly, there it is. A little bit of joy, quietly woven in.

Once you start noticing it, it begins to feel like a trail you can follow. A staff member passing by with a hint of shimmer tucked behind her ear. A resident at lunch whose hair catches the sunlight just enough to glow. One woman, with bright white hair, now threaded with bold red strands that feel both playful and perfectly her.

At the center of it all is King’s Grant resident Sylvia Knight, who has quietly become something of a fairy hair connoisseur on campus.

It started with her sister, Carolyn Alderman, who moved to King’s Grant from Wilmington, North Carolina. Back home, Carolyn had made a habit of getting fairy hair, a small ritual of sparkle woven into ordinary days. When she arrived, she was not ready to leave that behind, and Sylvia was not ready to let her.

With a little patience and a lot of YouTube videos, Sylvia taught herself the technique. Strand by strand, knot by knot, she brought something new to the community. What began as a simple sisterly gesture has gently spread, catching on in the most natural way. Now it is something shared. Something people look forward to. Something that, in its own quiet way, mirrors the spirit of the place.

There is just one catch.

Sylvia has not quite mastered doing it on herself yet. So, if you see her adding a little sparkle to someone else’s day, she might be looking for a volunteer in return.

Even the fairy hair expert deserves a little magic too.
