This summer was a season of change for the Newcomer family as both of Karen’s parents faced health challenges. Her mother spent time in Health Care and eventually transitioned to hospice, where she passed away on August 25. At the same time, her father was moving into Assisted Living. It was, in Karen’s words, “a frantic and emotional season.”
Through it all, Karen shared that Sunnyside staff in every area went above and beyond. From the clinic and health care teams who patiently answered countless questions, to chaplains Cynthia and Ann who visited and called often, to Occupational Therapist Tiffany Marcum who checked in daily, the family felt surrounded by care and compassion. Even housekeeping staff and the smiling team at the entrance gate played a role in helping the Newcomers feel supported.
Karen wrote of the medical staff, “I simply don’t have the words. They not only looked after Mom and Dad, but also cared for us. The third-floor staff began to feel like family. In Mom’s last days, they brought us food, blankets, and pillows as we sat with her hour after hour. Nurses and aides constantly checked on us while giving Mom the very best care. I am so thankful they were there during her last days.”
Now, with her father in Assisted Living, Karen is thankful for the way staff encourage him to join others for meals, check in daily, and even lift his spirits with simple conversations. “My family and I think Sunnyside is wonderful,” she wrote. “We are thankful almost beyond words for the community… and it really is a community, not just a place to live.”
