By engaging the leading expert in the U.S. in Multi-Sensory Environments, Sunnyside Communities offers environments that create positive experiences and activities for residents with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Using lighting, atmosphere, sounds, and textures, our trained staff design individualized experiences for residents to help reduce anxiety and promote feelings of well-being. The focus is to assist residents in gaining the maximum pleasure from the activity.
Multi-Sensory Environments grew out of a concept called Snoezelen (which combines two Dutch verbs that mean “sniffing” or to seek out/explore, and “dozing” or to relax) that began in Holland. In the late 1970s, two Dutch therapists set up an experimental sensory tent containing objects that appealed to every sense. It was a huge success and since then has become a worldwide movement, present in more than thirty countries.
